Stolen laptops sometimes do not go online again for days or weeks after they go missing. Thieves may have resold them to a store, may be stockpiling them, or may be attempting to tamper with them offline. As soon as a laptop goes online, the LoJack for Laptops Theft Recovery Team can begin tracking it using a variety of forensic methods.

In our latest recovery story, it was a two weeks after a residential burglary when the stolen laptop made its first post-theft connection. We were able to gather basic information about the suspect, putting together information for the local police department to obtain a warrant.

We were notified that the suspect identified as using the stolen laptop is also a suspect in a homicide from a relative of the victim.

Local police were able to recover the stolen laptop and arrest the suspect for breaking & entering a dwelling. Other investigations are ongoing.

In addition to recovery of lost devices, our investigations often lead to intelligence on related criminality. Our investigations have led to additional charges in parole violations, robbery, burglary, child pornography, counterfeiting, firearms / narcotics possessions, and murder.
