Some LoJack for Laptops recoveries are full of unexpected twists and turns. Here’s one that we continued to work at, despite all its twists!
In 2009, a laptop was stolen during an apartment break-in, though the case remained cold until the laptop began connecting to the internet 4 months later… from Honduras. The customer launched the LoJack for Laptops data delete shortly after the theft, so the data was safe, but we were unable to recover the device from Honduras at the time.
In 2012, the laptop began connecting again, but this time from Miami. After collecting details about the user, the laptop went dormant again. We continued to track the movements of this device over the next year, at which point we decided to contact the user by email (after finding this information) to alert them that the device was stolen. The user immediately contacted police, eager to return the laptop. The original laptop owner was surprised the laptop was found and exclaimed that it was a “crazy story,” one we’re sure will get shared as a personal story. We definitely talk about it here!
It is unclear how the laptop made into the hands of the user, who traveled between the US and Honduras frequently, though we suspect the laptop was purchased second hand. For tips on how to avoid buying a stolen computer, read here.
