In a case of “What was he thinking?”, one of our recently laptop recoveries involved a suspect who stole a laptop during a residential break-in while wearing an ankle monitoring device from a previous court order. Knowing his whereabouts were being tracked at all times, we’re not sure why this suspect thought he’d get away with the crime.

Here’s how it went down: a laptop was reported stolen to us after a burglary. Our forensic investigations revealed quite a bit about the user. Once we relayed this information to local law enforcement (which ended up being a different jurisdiction than the theft location), the laptop was quickly recovered. But here’s where the story gets interesting.

The laptop was being used by a high school student whose mother purchased the laptop from an ad on Craigslist. The seller sold the laptop in a public location, so the mother was able to give a good description of the suspect. The detective working the case had past knowledge of the suspect, who he knew was wearing an ankle monitoring device.

Thanks to the ankle monitoring device, the detective was able to determine that the suspect had been at the victim’s residence on the day of the burglary. What could be clearer than that?
